My Style: How (and Why) I'm Deliberate About My Wardrobe

When I wrote the title of this post, “how I’m deliberate about my style” I chuckled to myself. For the longest time I didn’t feel like I had a style.

I used to get stressed out about what I would wear before an event and aways feel like I was walking around like a slob kabob.

However, over the last couple years I’ve found more confidence in my style and the way I show up.

I’ve also started to become more deliberate about what I buy and why I buy it.

While I still don’t feel like the most stylish person walking the street, more and more I find myself getting questions about the clothes that I’m wearing.

As always, when you ask, I answer!

I will say, the more deliberate I am about what I wear, the more confident I’ve become.

There is definitely something to be said for the saying “look good, feel good”.

With that, here’s the rules I mostly follow when I am adding to my wardrobe!

ONLY WEAR NEUTRALS

This happened accidentally, but a few years ago I looked in my closet and realized that the majority of my clothes are black, grey, white and beige.

I do this for a couple reasons:

  1. I’m not a huge fan of bright colours
  2. I like to be able to wear the same clothes over and over (even in the same week) without looking like I’m wearing the same clothes over and over

Wear a black sweater a few times a week – no one will notice.

Wear a red sweater a few times a week – you’re the girl who always wears the red sweater.

Having a colour palette allows me to mix and matcha and get more out of what I have.

INVEST IN STAPLE ITEMS

I’m not into fast fashion.

I don’t want to buy something cheap and have it fall apart in 4-5 washes. You think you snag a great deal on a sweater, only to wash it and have it fit completely different.

I invest in staple items that I can wear again and again. Some of my favourite sweaters I have been wearing for years!

This is better for the environment and in the long run, it’s better for your wallet and saves you time, because you’re not scrambling or whipping to the mall to find something to wear.

For example, if we have a special occasion, chances are I am going to buy a black dress or something neutral that I can wear to the next event too!

BUY MULTI-PURPOSE PIECES

When I invest in something I always ask – when and where can I wear this?
I want to buy things that I can wear time and time again, in different situations.

I tend to buy sweaters that I can dress up or dress down.

I want to be able to wear it to pick-up with a pair of sneakers, leggings and running shoes.
Then out to dinner with a pair of leather pants and booties.

TIMELESS MULTI-PURPOSE JEWELLERY

I really have zero business talking about jewellery, but I’m gong to do it anyways.

I like to keep it simple with jewellery too. If I’m going to buy something I want to be able to wear it for YEARS! I’m not kidding either.

I have worn the same pearl earrings in my ears every day for I think 4 years now (before that I had another pair that I accidentally left in a hotel room in Mexico – not a good day).

If I want to spice things up, I put on a pair of plain gold hoops.

I either wear my Apple Watch or my wood watch from Revival by Martin and Co.

Some call it boring, but there is something classy about simplicity.

PURGE

I’m not one to keep things around “just in case”. If I haven’t worn something in 1-2 years I either donate or sell it on Facebook Marketplace (I made a few hundreds bucks just last week)

When I have clothes that I don’t wear in my closet, things get unorganized fast.

With our busy schedule I don’t have time to be dinking around in there, trying to find something to wear.

In my mind, when it comes to clothes (especially ones that you’ve been deliberate about buying) less is more!

looking for inspiration?

When I’m struggling to find something to wear, I always head to Pinterest. I have a board with my favourite looks and also one with inspiration for AthLeisure Style (which is my favourite).
